The Queenstown hockey women on Saturday had their second win in as many games, beating a physical Upper Clutha side 5-1 in Cromwell.

With the Trust Bank Southland champions trophy up for the taking, the Queenstown side was forced to defend some early goal-scoring attempts from Upper Clutha, and after holding out for 20 minutes, Queenstown was rewarded with its first goal by Gilly Hindley, who also scored in the second half.

After the breakthrough, the goals came easily and Queenstown began to frustrate the opposition with a staunch defensive effort from Theresa Wallace at fullback and centre half Hope Bates.

Linda Williams and Sarah Larsen linked well to launch several goal opportunities and Williams was able to steal two of her own.

Goalscorers for Queenstown were Linda Williams (2), Gilly Hindley (2) and Hope Bates.

Queenstown will play No 1 rivals Alexandra on Saturday in Cromwell.
