Queenstown Winter Festival Dog Derby

Man's best friend got a treat yesterday as dog owners took their companions up a mountain and then ran down again.

Part of the Queenstown Winter Festival, the annual dog derby saw the 33 handlers first try to get their dogs on a chairlift to get to the top of Coronet Peak and then chase their canine down the slippery, snowy terrain. Some lost track of their dogs altogether.

Christian Chester and Mojo, from Queenstown, won the town dog section and Troy Macdonald and Max, from Athol, the country.

After the dogs and owners had warmed up, around 30 dogs and owners made their way down to Earnslaw Park in a battle to see which dog could deliver the biggest bang for their bark.

Overall winner was Tom Ward and Mac, from Southland.
