A 32-year-old Queenstown man is dead after two cars crashed on Frankton-Ladies Mile Highway, near Tucker Beach Rd, about 5pm yesterday.

The man was in a critical condition and taken by ambulance to Lakes District Hospital.

He died about 8pm.

The driver of the other car was a 31-year-old man from Queenstown, who had lower leg injuries.

He was taken to the same hospital for treatment.

There were no other occupants in either car.

Queenstown police, firefighters from Queenstown and Frankton stations and St John Wakatipu attended the incident.

Debris from the crash was scattered for several metres around the scene and down an adjacent embankment.

Rush-hour and peak-holiday traffic was brought to a standstill, or slowed to a crawl, as far back as 3km into Queenstown along Frankton Rd while emergency services operated.
