Queenstown boy hit by car, man pepper-sprayed

An eight-year-old boy suffered a broken leg when he was struck by a car on a pedestrian crossing in central Queenstown yesterday.

Senior Constable Terry Erceg said the boy, a resort resident, was taken to Invercargill's Southland Hospital with a compound fracture of his lower leg after being hit on the Stanley St pedestrian crossing about 5pm.

The boy was being supervised by a family member at the time.

Police would speak to several witnesses today before deciding whether the driver - a Queenstown resident - would be charged, Sen Const Erceg said.

Pepper spray used on man

A Christchurch man continued to struggle with police after being pepper-sprayed in central Queenstown.

The 18-year-old was arrested about 1.30am after refusing to dispose of a bottle he was drinking from in Camp St, inside the resort's liquor ban area.

Sen Const Erceg said the man instead smashed the bottle over a rubbish bin and "did a runner''.

The man was found at nearby bar and continued to struggle with police after being sprayed. He has been charged with resisting arrest and depositing dangerous litter.
