Q’town Airport passenger numbers up 21.1%

Domestic and international visitors continue to drive strong passenger growth at Queenstown Airport.

The airport's latest monthly statistics show passenger numbers rose 21.1% to 148,698 last month compared with the same month last year.

Domestic passengers numbers were up 22.2%, while international passenger numbers were up 18%, with growth on all international routes.

The airport does not record the number of international travellers on domestic flights, but airport communications manager Jen Andrews said it was likely the addition of long-haul services to New Zealand had a flow-on effect, particularly on the Auckland-Queenstown route, which was up 31%.

The boost in February passenger numbers was attributed to the Chinese New Year holiday season, Waitangi weekend visitors and various events, including the Challenge Wanaka triathlon.

In January, the airport announced total passenger movements topped 1.5 million last year, a record for a 12-month period.
