Primary school enrolments up

More than 200 new pupils begin studying this term in the Wakatipu area's seven schools.

Queenstown Primary School opened last Wednesday with an extra 35 pupils - 23 of whom turned 5 years old in December and January - taking the roll to 542 pupils in total.

Remarkables Primary School was expected take on another 60 pupils in the first week of its new term, which increased the pupil population to 416. The Frankton school was built for 460 pupils.

Its reduced enrolment zone, requested and approved by the Ministry of Education in an attempt to manage roll growth, was due to take effect on April 23.

An extra four teachers have been taken on, increasing staff numbers to 37.

Arrowtown School welcomed a class of 20 children who turned 5 since the end of the last school year. The record large number will take the entire roll to at least 430 pupils.

The eight new pupils who started lessons in St Joseph's School takes the pupil population to 140. The Catholic primary school can take up to 175 pupils.

An appeal to the High Court by neighbouring parties against the Environment Court's approval for a proposed second campus to cater for an extra 112 pupils, to be managed by St Joseph's, will be heard next month.

Kings View School will welcome at least two new pupils by the end of the term, one from Queenstown and the other from the United Kingdom. They will take the enrolment to 15 pupils with two teachers.

A total of 25 pupils in years 0 to 8 also began their studies at Glenorchy School this week, including one new entrant from the township.

Wakatipu High School was expecting 700 pupils on its roll when classes began yesterday for all pupils after Waitangi Day, including its first lot of year 9 pupils, numbering 125 children.

At least two or three new pupils were thought to have enrolled for the new year after their families left quake-hit Christchurch for Queenstown, although staff did not specifically ask the question.
