The casket containing the body of John Aspinall (60) of Mt Aspiring Station is carried from his funeral in Wanaka yesterday.

Pallbearers included daughters Catie and Rachal, son Randall and brother Willie.

A guard of honour was provided by Federated Farmers representatives and class 10AK from Otago Boys' High School, which Mr Aspinall attended as a boarder for five years.

Up to 1000 people attended the farewell for the popular Matukituki Valley high country farmer, who served on many regional and national organisations and, with his wife Sue, championed outdoor recreation opportunities.

The Rev Catherine Little led the service and tributes were delivered by siblings Julia and Chris Aspinall, farmers Charlie Ewing and Jack Davis and Federated Mountain Club representative Rob Mitchell.

An obituary will be published in tomorrow's edition of the Otago Daily Times.
