A prowler may still be looking for targets in Arrowtown, police say.
After several reports of suspicious behaviour, police are urging residents to be conscious of safety.
Over the past couple of weeks a series of incidents where a man was seen entering properties or lurking around homes have been reported to the police. Police describe the man as in his early 20s with a "tidy" appearance, an English accent and a tattoo on his inner right forearm.
Detective Lisa Watt, of Queenstown, said no further incidents had been reported over the past few days, but several people had come forward with information about possible sightings of the person in question.
"Arrowtown has always had a relaxed atmosphere.
"But a lot of people are just passing through, and might not be known to the community.
"Even in this town, it is a good idea to be safety conscious, lock doors and windows and not leave valuables in plain sight," she said.
There was no indication the man was posing as a door-to-door salesman or charity collector while checking out houses for burglary, she said.
The Unicef employees working in the area had nothing to do with the incidents, Det Watt said.
But she urged people to ask for identification when people knocked at the door saying they represented an organisation.
A few days ago, a woman living at a Cornwall St address told police she found a road cone placed beside her front door.
"It might just be a prank, but we will of course take everything into consideration, and appreciate any reports of suspicious behaviour," Det Watt said.
