Police inquiry after rape complaint

Wanaka police have said little about a rape investigation they launched after a 21-year-old woman laid a complaint against three men allegedly involved in an incident on Saturday morning.

Detective Dave Evans, of Wanaka, has asked for information from anyone who was near the Lake Wanaka Villas at Heritage Park beside Cardrona Valley Rd and Orchard Rd, between 3am and 5am on Saturday.

The three alleged offenders were interviewed by police on Saturday, Det Evans said.

The men were all known to the complainant, he said.

"It's a complicated case," he said.

No arrests had been made and Det Evans declined to reveal any further details because of concerns they could identify the complainant.

Det Evans would not say whether any of the group was from overseas and described them only as "visitors to the town".

He declined to say if the group was staying at the Wanaka Villas accommodation complex at Heritage Park.

Wanaka Villas reservations manager Peter Barrow said the accommodation complex did not have an on-site manager at Heritage Park.

He was told by police about the rape complaint on Saturday morning, but knew nothing else about the alleged incident.

Meanwhile, police are calling for information from the public after an indecent assault in Lismore Park, Wanaka, early yesterday.

Constable Martin Barham said the assault, on a 19-year-old female, occurred about 1am.

The complainant was not injured.
