Police gain lead in rape inquiry following appeal

A police appeal for help solving a rape complaint has drawn one piece of information from the public, which is now being followed up.

A similar appeal for help regarding an alleged assault on a male hitchhiker on Monday morning has so far drawn a blank.

Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said yesterday the information regarding the rape complaint was "a link in the chain" and he did not expect the case would be solved quickly.

A teenage girl has alleged she was followed by a car, then chased, tackled to the ground and raped by the driver, in Albert Town about 10pm on Saturday October 16.

The incident, which was reported several weeks after the event, occurred near the corner of Sherwin and Dale Sts.

The offender was described as a male of average build, wearing a black hooded top and trousers, and driving possibly a silver Nissan, with a noisy exhaust.

The police appealed for public help last week as they were "struggling to advance the inquiry".

Constable Mike Thomas said Monday's hitchhiker case involved a dark grey car, not a silver car as reported yesterday.

The male victim had run out of fuel in his vehicle on State Highway 6 near the bottom of a hill between Albert Town and Mt Iron and was picked up by three caucasian males believed to be aged 25 or under.

Police are keen to hear from anyone travelling on State Highway 6 between 8.30am and 9.30am who may have seen him being picked up.

The man alleged he was then driven back to Albert Town and through to the Hikuwai Reserve at the Albert Town end of the Outlet Walking Track, where the assault occurred.
