The long-awaited installation of a flagpole beside the Queenstown Memorial Gates, which started this week, means the Anzac Day Parade wanted by the Queenstown Returned and Services Association (RSA) can be held next year.

Queenstown Lakes District Council community services general manager Paul Wilson said yesterday the Douglas-fir timber flagpole from Finland would be lit by four white uplights. The two lampposts which stand in front of the gates at present would be removed.

The new lights would illuminate the World War 2 plaque on the gates plus three plaques commemorating other theatres of conflict in which New Zealanders fought. Space was available for more plaques and uplighting, Mr Wilson said.

The $30,000 flagpole project was extra to the earlier $126,000 landscaping and lighting upgrade of Marine Pde.
