The playground between Queenstown Gardens and the Bathhouse Restaurant is getting an overhaul with new bark cover, but should be open for children again from today.
The facility is owned by the Queenstown Lakes District Council and maintained by Asplundh. Julian Croft, from Asplundh, was working on the project yesterday and said the existing cover had been "worn out" during the recent floods and needed replacement.
"The cover had been well used over the years, and was due for a replacement soon. After the flood it was decided to remove the remaining bark and top soil and put in a new layer of bark," Mr Croft said.
About 26cu m of bark was removed and the same quantity of new bark was added. The old bark will be used in the compost for Queenstown Gardens.
QLDC community services general manager Paul Wilson said the replacement of bark was part of the maintenance budget for the town's playgrounds, and would not require extra funds.
"We inspect all the playgrounds on a regular basis, and all maintenance is carried out as needed," Mr Wilson said.
