Plans for Hawea foreshore

Contact Energy has devised a draft plan for developing and landscaping the Lake Hawea foreshore, with the majority of projects to be completed by May 2010.

The electricity generator prepared the document under its Environment Court resource consents to operate dams on the Clutha River and store and release water in Lake Hawea.

The company now has to analyse feedback from a recent community workshop, release a final draft for public comment and obtain the approval of the Otago Regional Council by the end of June.

On July 1, the Queenstown Lakes District Council will take over management of the foreshore amenities, under an agreement already completed with Contact Energy and Land Information New Zealand.

The Lake Hawea Community Association has lobbied hard for improvements for many years and about 70 people attended the workshop.

Lake Hawea Guardians chairman Grant Fyfe described it as a positive event and "good community consultation".

"It was a good turnout, a lot of interest . . . there was quite a bit of agreement," Mr Fyfe said.

Residents were keen to see more tree-planting, including natives and other species providing autumnal colour.

More toilets and rubbish bins were also called for, as well as keeping open spaces available for playgrounds.

There is also a proposal to dig out an area near the Lake Hawea boat ramp to improve a swimming area, and to beautify the surrounding area near the swimming hole.
