A buider of castles is being sought and construction will need to be complete by early October.

In October, Dorothy's unforgettable ruby slippers will catch the eyes of an audience at the Queenstown Ice Arena as they glide across the ice.

Ice-skating coach Deanna Pielak-Jones is training nearly 80 skaters from the Queenstown Ice Skating Club for The Wizard of Oz On Ice production, though more can still sign up.

Consequently, a castle is needed.

The show will be held during the first weekend of October, but half-hour, free presentations of The Wizard of Oz are to be held at the arena at 12.30pm today, 3pm on Saturday and 6.30pm on Sunday in advance of the big show.

Before teaching in the resort, Ms Pielak-Jones trained award-winning figure skaters and put together ice shows, including The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and The Snow Queen at Dunedin and Gore rinks.

The Wizard of Oz was chosen because it had ''lots of main characters so lots of people can be stars. It's colourful, it's got good music'' and, of course, because of the battle between good and evil.

Shows had been performed at the Queenstown Ice Arena before her time, but Ms Pielak-Jones said the lighting had since been improved.

More adult skaters were needed, she said.

''I want to put them in a ballroom scene at the Emerald Castle.''

''I'm hoping to get some ice hockey players to partner the ladies.''

Committee members to help organise and produce the show are also required, and Ms Pielak-Jones is appealing for people with skills in props, music, lighting, costumes, tickets and advertising to get in touch with her at the arena. And she would welcome advice from any experienced castle-maker.
