Queenstown Arts Society members are making a renewed push to make their Cloakroom Gallery a hub of the community, with a grand reopening as a contemporary art retail gallery and an open day.

Jan Maxwell, Queenstown Lakes District Council arts and events facilitator, will cut the ribbon to officially relaunch the seven-year-old gallery on the corner of Stanley and Ballarat Sts on Friday at 5.30pm.

The Queenstown Arts Centre will hold an open day the following Saturday, from 10am-4pm. The Cloakroom Gallery will extend its opening hours from 10am to 4pm, five days a week, from September 1.

There will be a combined retail gallery and space available for selected artists to hold their own exhibitions. The society's aim is to promote artists from

Wakatipu and the surrounding areas and to involve the wider community in the visual arts.

''With its central location and ample foot traffic, opening the doors more regularly seems logical,'' new gallery manager Andie King, of Arthur's Point, said on Friday.
