A desire to offer an alternative to picture postcard snaps for residents and visitors is behind a new fine art photography gallery which opens this week.

Queenstown photographers Marina Mathews and Kevin Wakeling present their work in the Project Space, in the foyer of the Mountaineer building in Rees St. The installation was expected to be completed yesterday and the public launch will be held tomorrow at 5pm.

Ms Mathews said on Friday they had talked about a joint venture over the past five years.

Mr Wakeling said there were very few dedicated photography outlets in Queenstown and they saw an opportunity to express the fine art side of photography when they were offered the space in the Mountaineer.

Limited edition prints and mixed media in frames, or mounted in different styles will be displayed, they said.

Artwork could be bought from $400, or leased.

Ms Mathews will display 32 of her photographs, mostly from her fauna and architecture series. Mr Wakeling will present at least eight of his "intimate landscapes", particularly of Fiordland.

They said it was important residents, holiday homeowners and commercial interior designers were drawn to the gallery for it to succeed. New works will be regularly displayed and future plans included invitations to guest photographers to periodically exhibit their complementary work.

The Project Space will be managed by the photographers when their commitments allowed. Otherwise, inquiries could be made in Kapa Design Gallery across Rees St.
