Queenstown residents will have a chance to see the Wellington Phoenix train at the Queenstown Events Centre on Friday before its pre-season match against the Melbourne Victory the following day.

The pre-match training session is open to the public from 3.30pm to 5pm.

Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said the match was important for the Phoenix's pre-season build-up to the 2009-10 A-League season.

"We've just signed former Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Reece Crowther and English striker and top scorer Chris Greenacre, so together with our seven All Whites, there's plenty of firepower in our squad," he said.

The Victory is the reigning A-League champion and has won the league in two of the past three years.

Following practice, the Phoenix and Victory captains will take the stage to help launch this year's Queenstown Winter Festival.

On Saturday, Medicine Men and Wakatipu High School band Your Grandma will provide pre-match entertainment and there will be a penalty shoot-out between the Queenstown under-10s and under-12s at half-time.

The club has also entered a Phoenix-themed float in the WinterFest street parade, which starts at 11am.

• Wellington Phoenix plays Melbourne Victory in a pre-season match at the Queenstown Events Centre at 2.30pm on Saturday. Gates open at 11.30am with a Queenstown Rovers v Grants Braes curtain-raiser.

Tickets cost $6 for children and $21 and $26 for adults and they are available from www.ticketdirect.co.nz or the Queenstown Events Centre and Queenstown i-Site.
