After an eight-year wait, Arrowtown residents and visitors have only a few weeks to go until the town's petrol station opens.

RD Petroleum managing director Don Harvey, of Dunedin, told the Otago Daily Times at the site yesterday the $1 million self-service station was on schedule to open early in November, depending on the weather.

The petrol station, which will contain two pumps and four refuelling points, selling 91 and 95-octane petrol and diesel fuel, is being built on the corner of Wiltshire and Berkshire Sts.

The last time the town had a petrol station was in 2007, on a site opposite RD Petroleum.

RD Petroleum engineer and project manager Craig Fitzgerald, of Christchurch, said despite difficulties with the project, it was clearly a long-awaited development, based on the number of people who stopped to ask about progress.

The station will include exposed concrete, a plinth with inlaid schist and a cobblestone entrance, in keeping with the town's historic feel.
