Pedestrians hit by car; police seek witnesses

Queenstown police are seeking witnesses to an alleged drink-driving hit-and-run accident after two pedestrian were hit by a car and admitted to hospital with moderate injuries late on Thursday night.

Sergeant Linda Stevens, of Queenstown, said police were alerted about midnight to the crash on Gorge Rd, near central Queenstown, involving a car - described as a silver Toyota Estima - which crossed the centre line, mounted the footpath and hit two pedestrians.

A third pedestrian narrowly escaped being hit and the driver failed to stop at the scene, Sgt Stevens said. The victims, a man and woman, both 24, were taken to Lakes District Hospital with moderate injuries. They were later transferred to Southland Hospital.

The driver (30) was later found and interviewed and charged with drink-driving.

He also faces two charges of driving with excess breath-alcohol causing injury, and a further charge of failing to stop and ascertain injury and will appear at the Queenstown District Court later this month.

"Police are asking any witnesses to the hit and run, and also anyone who may have seen the vehicle prior to, or after the incident who have not yet been spoken to, to please contact the Queenstown police on (03) 441-1600," Sgt Stevens said.
