A group of brightly-clad children rode to Wanaka Primary School, after breakfast yesterday, to mark Bike Wise month.

The children enjoyed a breakfast of bacon and lettuce wraps, fresh fruit and yoghurt in before pedalling to school.

The event was organised by road safety co-ordinator Jo Robinson. It was attended by 233 Wanaka residents, including 98 adults.

The oldest cyclist was 75, while the four youngest attending were all aged under 1.

The final Central Otago Bike-wise Breakfast takes place in Alexandra today.

So far, Wanaka has had the biggest turnout, with Cromwell second (203) followed by Arrowtown (50).

"Last year, Cromwell beat Wanaka by two. Cromwell and Wanaka had the highest turnout as a percentage of the population. It is a very close competition between the two," Mrs Robinson said.

"Wanaka had a large number of adults turning up, which was encouraging. Children are often keen to bike or walk, but adults can take a little more convincing," she said.
