Pay raise for councillors

Queenstown Lakes district councillors voted unanimously to accept a 6.89% pay increase for the 2009-10 year at a meeting in Wanaka on Tuesday.

The annual salaries for the mayor and councillors are determined by the Remuneration Authority, which set an indicative pool of $454,106 for the next financial year, up from $426,486 in the current financial year.

The total of all payments made to elected members cannot exceed the pool set by the authority, although exceptions apply for attendances at resource consent hearing and to half the salaries paid to elected community board members.

The new salaries are:Mayor (Clive Geddes), $85,316 ($82,472); councillors, $28,077 ($26,267); councillors-committee chairmen, $38,606 ($36,117); Wanaka councillor-community board chairman (Lyal Cocks), $38,606 ($36,117); Wanaka community board members-committee members: $17,688 ($16,548).
