Paragliding in perfect conditions

Strong winds kept 16 top paragliders on the ground yesterday morning but they took to the sky in the afternoon for the annual Acrofest competition near Kingston.

Drew Moore (United Kingdom) is pictured swooping in to land in Lake Wakatipu during the competition. "The wind died down for the afternoon, so it was perfect," organiser Craig Taylor said.

Competitors had to do four tricks before landing in Lake Wakatipu.

Extra points were awarded to those who landed on rafts in the lake, he said.

Queenstown paraglider Luca Soulos said it was a fantastic event.

"It was great.

"The conditions were perfect.

"I took off and the views were fantastic of the lake and it's so beautiful.

"You have plenty of height to play with to do your tricks," he said.

The competition will continue at Queenstown Bay today, weather permitting.

The Day at the Bay will be postponed until next Saturday if winds are too strong.
