Abanazar (John Currie) the wicked magician weaves his evil magic on Aladdin (Olivia Ward) while the beautiful Rosita (Eeleel Edwy) enchants the crowd with her dancing. The trio are part of the Arrowtown Entertainers' forthcoming pantomime, 'Aladdin and His Lamp'.
A pre-Christmas treat promises to spirit audiences to the Middle East at the end of this month when a group of amateur actors presents pantomime in Arrowtown for the first time.

Aladdin and His Lamp was written by Dave Dutson, formerly of Arrowtown, now living in Invercargill, and is directed by Arrowtown resident Marion Patton.

It will be performed at the Athenaeum Hall on November 28 and 29.

Mrs Patton said she had been involved in several pantomimes, and was excited about producing Arrowtown's inaugural presentation.

"Pantomimes are so much fun for the actors and the audience.

"It's a great family show, where members of the audience get to participate in the proceedings. We encourage cheering and booing."

Members of the Arrowtown Entertainers group would be on stage, along with some younger members of the community.

Nigel Douglas, Arrowtown Entertainers president and performer with the group during the Arrowtown autumn festival, will play Widow Twankey.

Olivia Ward, a newcomer to the Arrowtown stage, will play Aladdin, and John Currie, who has an impressive theatrical background which includes performing at the Sydney Opera House, will play Abanazar, the wicked magician.

Five other adults have been cast in the show, along with 11 Wakatipu High School pupils and some younger pupils with experience in ballet and gymnastics, Mrs Patton said.

"This has been a great opportunity to work with a cast of all ages from 6-year-olds through to 60-year-olds.

"We've really enjoyed bringing the community together to produce a feelgood show in the build-up to Christmas."

The Arrowtown Entertainers have been performing together for 12 years.

The group is a regular feature of the Arrowtown Autumn Festival, but this is its first foray into pantomime and producing a show outside of the festival.

"Watch this space . . . We've got lots of ideas for future shows, so we really hope the community gets behind us on this one.

"We encourage everyone to come along to enjoy some good old-fashioned entertainment.

"The whole family will love it," she said.

Aladdin and His Lamp will be performed at Arrowtown's Athenaeum Hall on November 28 and 29 from 7.30pm. Tickets cost $15 per adult, $5 per child and $25 for a family ticket, with pre-schoolers free. Door sales only.
