The intersection layout of Wanaka's two main streets will be redesigned and the Queenstown Lakes District Council has prepared a discussion document detailing the options.

The document will be released publicly next week and a public drop-in session is planned at the Lake Wanaka Centre on Thursday from 8am till 10am so people can talk to councillors and staff.

The options include:

• A roundabout on the corner of Brownston and Ardmore Sts (Caltex corner).

• Parking changes on Brownston St and on the lakefront.

• Changes to the Lakeside Rd and Ardmore St intersection.

• Streetscape improvements on upper Ardmore St.

The need for changes to improve traffic and pedestrian flow through Wanaka's central business district was flagged in 2002.

Concerns have been raised several times at Wanaka Community Board meetings.

The board confirmed in August the design stage and some of the construction would probably be completed by 2012.

Proposals for change were included in the recently-completed Wanaka Town Centre strategy.

The New Zealand Transport Agency recently set aside $300,000 as "category 2" (which means it is probably available and depends on the council making a funding application) to pay for the redesign of Brownston and Ardmore intersection.

The council has set aside $2.7 million in its 10-year plan for transportation improvements in Wanaka, including for Brownston and Ardmore Streets.

The closing date for feedback is February 5.

Council infrastructure strategy manager Denis Mander will then prepare a report for a Wanaka Community Board meeting in March.
