People of all ages gathered at the Arrowtown day of jazz yesterday to enjoy the soothing sounds of jazz masterpiece the Calder Prescott Quartet.

Trumpet melodies sounded from Buckingham Green to as the Calder Prtescott Quartet began the Arrowtown leg of the 2010 ASB Queenstown Jazz Festival.

And more than 100 jazzy jacks and happening dolls gathered at Queenstown Memorial Hall on Saturday night to listen to the swinging sounds of Kiri Winders and her 1940s Jazz Club.

The lights were low and the atmosphere was reminiscent of 1940s Mississippi as Winders took the Queenstown audience on a trip down memory lane.

With her swinging six-piece jazz club band, Winders covered everything from Louis Armstrong to Frank Sinatra.

Event manager Simon Green said the event was his personal highlight of the entire festival.

"The appreciation from the community for the night was brilliant. Kiri was amazing," he said.

Entering its final day today, the annual festival has seen more than 150 local, national and international jazz artists show their talents at more than 50 musical events around the Queenstown and Arrowtown area.

Mr Green has hailed the festival a huge success and says things will improve even further next year.

For those still revelling in the long weekend sunshine, the festival will close today with a final jazz instalment from Jeff Bradley and the Delta Swing, on Queenstown Village Green from 12pm.
