The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge may only be glimpsed by the public from two designated areas when they tour the Wakatipu on Sunday.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council is warning there will be no royal walkabouts scheduled in Queenstown.
The couple's lunch at the Amisfield Winery and a jet-boat trip with Shotover Jet will be private events, the Royal Visit Offices in the Department of Internal Affairs says.
Prince William and Catherine are scheduled to arrive at Queenstown Airport at 2pm on Sunday.
They will be greeted by Queenstown Lakes Mayor Vanessa van Uden.
''There will not be any opportunity for the public to see the Royal couple at the airport, as they will be exiting the airport directly from the tarmac, not walking through the terminal,'' council spokeswoman Michele Poole said.
''The entourage will drive directly to Amisfield, passing the Lake Hayes Pavilion, where parking will be available for people who would like to stand and watch the royal motorcade pass by,'' Ms Poole said.
''Spaces will be reserved for the Wakatipu Senior Citizens' Association, and additional car parking will be available on the grass.''
Two entrances to the Lake Hayes reserve will be open on Sunday - the main entrance to the pavilion and also the rowing club access road.
Traffic management staff will be on duty to direct vehicles within the reserve. The Royal couple are scheduled to pass the pavilion just before 2.15pm.
At 3.15pm they are scheduled to depart for Shotover Jet at Arthurs Point, driving via Lake Hayes-Arrowtown Rd.
The second public viewing area is at Millbrook Corner, at the intersection of Lake Hayes Rd and Malaghans Rd, where the couple are scheduled to pass by about 3.20pm.
''People will be able to stand inside the fence at the Millbrook Corner, but there will be no car parking available on the site, or along the roadline,'' Ms Poole said.
''People are advised to park in McDonnell Rd and walk along to the Millbrook Corner.''
Access to the Shotover River at Arthurs Point will be restricted on Sunday.
Motorists should expect delays of 5-10 minutes at the Edith Cavell Bridge between 3.30pm and 5.30pm.
People will not be permitted to stand on the bridge.
Only people with accreditation will be allowed into Shotover Jet by security personnel.
Department of Conservation tracks on either side of the Shotover River will be closed during the royal visit, at the request of the police.
Oxenbridge Tunnel Rd will be closed to the public, and there will be no vehicle access between Atley Rd and Arthurs Point Rd.
Ngai Tahu Tourism Southern regional manager David Kennedy, of Queenstown, said there would be limited viewing access, with part of the Shotover Jet operation in Arthurs Point blocked off for security.
''My advice would be to go to the two other designated spots, at Amisfield at the Lake Hayes Pavilion and at the Millbrook Corner, because there will be very, very limited viewing at Shotover Jet,'' Mr Kennedy said.
It is believed the Royal couple will stay in a luxury lodge near Glenorchy on Sunday night before returning to Queenstown and flying to Christchurch on Monday morning.
