No more clues in crash investigation

No further information has come to light in the ongoing investigation into Haast pilot Morgan Saxton's helicopter accident in Lake Wanaka in November last year, and any report was still likely to be "many months away", Transport Accident Investigation Commission investigator Peter Williams said yesterday.

Mr Williams said he was "grinding through the facts" and doing some background reading.

No further parts from the Robinson 22 helicopter had been recovered from the lake floor and the TAIC had decided not to pursue the recovery of the engine, which could not be found again, following an initial salvage operation by police and Navy divers.

TAIC had no comment in January when media reports emerged of cellphone communication between Mr Saxton and his friend Jonathan Wallis just prior to the accident.

Mr Williams said TAIC's position had not changed.

He said he could understand people wanted to know quickly what had happened but the investigation had to go through all the material before coming to a conclusion.
