Red carpet and Champagne will be absent from the first New Zealand public screening of the new Everest movie.

The film had its world premiere in Venice earlier this week, and next Thursday an audience of 82 will get to see the movie at Wanaka's Paradiso Cinema, before its New Zealand premiere a week later.

Adventure Consultants general manager Suze Kelly said yesterday the 82 seats sold out in a week.

Because of the sombre nature of the movie, there would be no extra activities around the screening.

''It is a very sad movie. All the staff here at Adventure Consultants have already seen the movie in Christchurch.

''So we are aware of its impact, and people need a bit of reflection time afterwards.''

Everest recounts the loss of New Zealand guides Rob Hall and Andy Harris, along with six others, in a violent storm on Mt Everest in 1996.

Rob Hall was a co founder of Adventure Consultants.

All the proceeds from the $50 per head Wanaka screening will go to the Adventure Consultants Sherpa Future Fund.

Ms Kelly said the money would assist Sherpas in need, particularly the families of those killed in recent avalanches and earthquakes.

The company's chief executive, Guy Cotter, who played a part in the attempted rescue of the climbers, left for Nepal late last month to guide a group of clients to the top of the world's eighth highest mountain, Mt Manaslu.

The movie Everest will be shown again in Wanaka after its official New Zealand release.
