A golf course designer, a former finance chief executive, a lawyer, a doctor, a property developer, two teachers and a Queenstown Lakes mayoral candidate are among the new trustees guiding the future of Wakatipu High School.

The 10 trustees want to engage with the community, create a clear strategic plan and devise better management systems, "with an urgency of action", new chairman Alistair Nicholson said recently.

Trustees were scheduled to receive a property report and principal's report at their second monthly meeting on Wednesday.

Parent trustee and former golf professional-turned course designer Greg Turner was expected to give his presentation on the board's new communications strategy.

The strategy would inform the new subcommittee tasked with improving information sharing with parents, staff, the community and within the school.

Mr Turner said there were "considerable improvements in all areas of communication" to be made.

When asked how he thought the school's recently introduced practice of mixing age groups in classrooms was working, Mr Turner said: "Philosophically, I personally have no issue with it.

"The traditional method of progressing youngsters simply according to their age has allowed us, as a society, to ignore the reality that they develop emotionally, physically and intellectually at different rates, anyway."

Parents and caregivers voted for the six parent trustees, while staff elected mathematics teacher Oded Nathan as their representative.

Principal Lyn Cooper returned to the board.

The student council elected year 13 pupil Jeremy Bell (17), while the Maori community elected Sheree Horomona.

Mactodd partner Dale Lloyd, Dr Kathryn Smith and developer Wayne Foley also joined the board.

Queenstown Lakes district councillor Vanessa van Uden returned for her second three-year term.

Election results came in on May 7 and the board met for the first time 10 days later.

The trustees elected Mr Nicholson chairman.

Committees were formed to handle property interests, finances, disciplinary issues, the strategic plan and school uniform and communications.
