The Wanaka Community Pool did not reopen as planned yesterday and may remain closed until next week because new problems have emerged with the water treatment plant.
Acting manager Dougal Allan said yesterday a new pump had been successfully installed and the continued closure was disappointing.
Staff were fixing the new problems and without tempting fate, he would like to say the pool would reopen this weekend.
"But to be safe, we will say [next] Monday".
The pool has been shut since the end of March.
"Another part of the plant broke down. It seems interesting that when we fix a problem, another one is found," Mr Allan said.
The Wanaka pool is managed by Queenstown Lakes District Council's company Lakes Leisure and the aquatics general manager Cam Sheppard was in Wanaka yesterday to help maintenance worker Mario De Bono with the plant.
The pool was not closed for maintenance last winter, which could be a factor in why the plant was now malfunctioning, Mr Allan said.
Wanaka Swimming Club president Roger Gordon said yesterday everyone knew the pool systems were old and breakdowns could happen.
It was a "catch-22 situation" because swimmers wanted the pool to operate year round and staff had had to nurse the plant along, Mr Gordon said.
