Wakatipu St John has a new $170,000 four-wheel-drive ambulance, which was commissioned at a dedication service in Queenstown on Friday.

Southern region area committee Darryl Robinson said the ambulance was designed to cater for Queenstown's climate, topography, adventure tourism and skiing activities.

Pub Charities donated $170,000 to buy the Mercedes Benz ambulance.

The Ministry of Health provides St John with only 75% of the cost of running, maintaining and purchasing vehicles.

Wakatipu St John team leader Alana Reid said the new ambulance would be the first-responder vehicle to emergencies from Wednesday.

The specialised ambulance was ideal for responding to skifield accidents. A similar ambulance was commissioned in Wanaka on Saturday.

Mr Robinson said 45% of the funds were raised by the Wanaka community, with the rest made up of grants from organisations including the Lion Foundation and the Otago Motor Club Trust.
