Mountain bikers to compete in eight-hour challenge

Endurance mountain-bike riders will battle it out at the inaugural 8hours@Jacks multi-lap race at the Stragglers Loop Track on Saturday.

The race is now in its second year, and teams of two, three and four riders will push themselves to ride as many laps as they can of the challenging 8km course in the space of eight hours.

Race director Geoff Hunt said the event was developed in response to a growing demand for a new and different style of mountain-bike event for elite and recreational riders.

"We think we have got the formula right and the stunning landscape is a drawcard on its own," Mr Hunt said.

Overlooking Lake Wakatipu, the Stragglers Loop passes through rocky outcrops and bush on the northern boundary of Jacks Point resort.

Teams will compete in junior, open and veteran sections, each divided into men's, women's and mixed gender categories.

Multisport enthusiast Jim Hawkridge, of Queenstown, will be racing in the event.

"It is an exhilarating course in a fantastic environment and a chance to get a good strong ride in early in the season," he said.
