Motorists under scrutiny on Kawarau bridge

Queenstown police say they are keeping a close eye on motorists ignoring red lights on the single-lane Kawarau Falls bridge, after a series of complaints about impatient and dangerous driving.

The bridge has been controlled by traffic lights for more than two years, stopping all traffic in one direction to allow those travelling the opposite way to cross.

Sergeant Brian Cameron, of Queenstown, said police had launched a traffic operation last week after ‘‘a number of complaints'' from the public.

The number of tickets issued so far was not available yesterday, but Sgt Cameron said the operation would continue for another week.

‘‘Even though it's a one-way bridge, it's a red light and you can't run it,'' he said. ‘‘It's a safety issue, not a curtesy issue.''
