Queenstown Montessori is expanding its roll to 38, which will ease demand for pre-school places and give Wakatipu parents choice in the style of education they want for their children, the owner says.

The early childhood education centre on Robins Rd has 20 children aged 3 to 5 on its roll. Last week, the centre gained consent to have 18 more children aged 2 to 5, owner Guy Hughes said.

Consent had been given to open 30 minutes earlier so parents could drop off their children at the centre from 8.30am.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council would soon build a drop-off zone next to the centre which Mr Hughes said would "hugely assist families dropping their children off".

Since the facility was officially opened in January, the interior has been renovated to Ministry of Education specifications. The exterior has been enlarged and parents have built a tree house.

A sandpit and activity zone with a "cave" have been added, along with a wooden fence fitted with safety glass so children can view ducks and spawning trout in Horn Creek. It also sports a "peace place", where pre-schoolers can sit quietly in the shade surrounded by plants and artworks.

Mr Hughes said the next-door Queenstown Language School - which he also owns - would soon move into the premises vacated by law firm Mactodd in O'Connells Shopping Centre in the centre of the resort.

The move, in about a month, would free up the language school building so Montessori could expand further if necessary.
