Mongolian adventurers raise $1000

Three Queenstown residents taking part in an unsupported rally across a third of the world's surface say they are "absolutely over the moon" to have raised more than $1000 for a children's charity.

Adventurers Carmen Doran, brother Marc Doran and friend Brent Clements are preparing to drive more than 16,000km in the 2010 Mongol Rally, starting on July 24.

The funds will go towards their chosen charity, the Christina Noble Children's Foundation, which builds homes for Mongolian orphans.

Ms Doran said Team Goodbye Pork Pie wanted to say "a massive thank you" for the community support shown at the Queenstown Ladies' Dinner Club, the Queenstown Chamber of Commerce Ladies' Business Luncheon and the screening of the cult Kiwi film and team namesake Goodbye Pork Pie earlier this month.

"We are absolutely over the moon to have raised $725 at the movie night and just over $1000 ($2150) net across these three events," Ms Doran said this week.

Ms Doran said the funds went a long way towards the team's goal of 1000 to help children in Mongolia.

Ms Doran and Mr Doran left Queenstown for Europe last Friday to continue preparations for their journey.

Mr Clements will join them next month, before Team Goodbye Pork Pie hits the road at the Goodwood racing circuit, near Portsmouth, on July 24.

They intend to arrive in the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator about five weeks and 22 countries later.

The team's progress can be tracked on www.goodbyeporkpie.com.
