Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler's signature inked on the back of fan Karine Robertson in a Queenstown parlour is the final piece of a tattoo which was six years in the making.

Mrs Robertson, of Christchurch, now has a permanent memento of her ''dream come true'', after she won a competition to meet the rock singer in person and then saw her beloved band of 20 years live for the first time, in Dunedin on April 24.

Mrs Robertson had the wings of the band's logo applied years earlier, with the names of her two daughters added instead of the word Aerosmith, to incorporate ''my two great loves, my kids and my favourite band'', she said.

''When I found out they were coming to New Zealand, I was just beside myself, so I got the tickets and then when I had the opportunity to try and win backstage passes, it was even better.

''I always said if I ever got to meet him [Tyler] that I would get him to sign my tattoo and get the signature tattooed on beneath my wings, so I got that dream, too.''

Mrs Robertson entered an ''air guitar'' competition, where she videoed herself miming a rock guitar performance to an Aerosmith hit, then was voted the public's favourite. She was told she had won about four days before the concert.

Mrs Robertson was escorted to meet Tyler, take photographs and have him sign a poster before the band took the stage.

She took her poster to White Tiger on Sunday, where friend and artist Brent Reidy works, to have the finishing touch to her Aerosmith tattoo applied. It took 30 minutes.

''Steve Tyler was absolutely beautiful in real life and he was really genuine, made us feel really welcome. It wasn't just like you were another fan. He made you feel like he was happy you were there,'' Mrs Robertson said.

''I managed to get a kiss on the lips and he sang to me a little bit. I said the song that was playing was one of my favourites [Tell Me from the new album Music from Another Dimension!] and I said that to him and he started singing it.

''Just a dream come true. The whole experience was out of this world.''
