Makeover for bicycle track

The mountain bike track at Bob's Peak has had a makeover in time for summer.

The upgraded purpose-built track was designed by Nathan Greenwood, of the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club.

Vertigo Bikes owner Tim Ceci said the upgrade was funded by the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club, the Queenstown Lakes District Council, Vertigo Bikes and Ziptrek Ecotours.

Mr Ceci said Ziptrek Ecotours, whose flying fox operation on Bob's Peak is well under way and is set to open by Christmas, had donated a significant amount of money to upgrade the trail.

He declined to say how much the upgrade cost.

The trail has been widened and new sections added to appeal to beginners.

"Before, it was very steep, narrow, rocky terrain. Now, it can be used by a much broader spectrum of riders," he said.

It still had features for advanced riders, such as rollers and double jumps.

The upgraded track is due to open next week.

He hoped the track would lead the way for greater access to Bob's Peak.

NZSki announced in September it would not open Coronet Peak's facilities for mountain bikers this summer.

Mr Ceci said it was a shame Coronet Peak was unavailable but added that Bob's Peak was where he believed a bike park should be.

"I think Coronet Peak did an excellent job, but the place for a bike park should be the middle of Queenstown. The long-term focus should be on improving the tracks there. It's much more exhilarating biking through the forest than out in the open," he said.

Council project manager Russell Engelke said the council had given $2500 towards the project.

"We're delighted with the results. It is a fantastic track up there," he said.
