The American Express Queenstown Winter Festival took to the slopes of Coronet Peak on Saturday to treat a huge crowd of skiers and snowboarders to an afternoon of fun and crazy antics.

A highlight of the grabaseat Mountain Mayhem, the suitcase race, saw 20 foolhardy souls hurl themselves down the mountain on suitcases.

Will Oswald, of Queenstown, dressed as Scuba Steve, won the prize for best-dressed entrant.

"It was the best fun I have had in a long time," he said.

Hayley Stevenson, of Queenstown, was the first female home, putting an end to an eight-year losing streak.

"I've been trying to win the suitcase race for eight years.

"I've come second five times and finally, persistence paid off," she said.

Nigel Lloyd, of Queenstown, won the male category and got a bloody nose in the process.

"I just tried to stay on the suitcase and paddle if I had to.

"I hit the crash pad too hard and got a nose bleed, but it was worth it to win," he said.

The title for winner of the Dash for Cash was hotly contested as a 30-strong field skied down the main M1 trail and ran back up the course to claim a share of the $1500 prize pool.

Marine Prevoteaux, of France, Mark Spence, of Queenstown, and Ben Ruer, of France, each took home $500.

Musical Chairs had 80 entrants, a festival record.

Gabriel Hurford-Lorenzo, of Hastings, won the open section's top prize of Air New Zealand flights.

Lucy Mortimer, of Auckland, kept her chair to win the children's section.
