The owner of Duck No 1854 (front) has not yet claimed $500 first prize in the inaugural Bullock Creek duck race. Behind are Wanaka Rotary's duck catcher Ian Haynes and the next four placegetters.
A speedy yellow plastic duck numbered 1854 blasted past 999 other competitors in the inaugural Bullock Creek duck race on Sunday to win a $500 first prize for its owner, but has not been claimed.

Wanakafest Trust chairwoman Janice Hughes said yesterday people should check their tickets and contact organisers as soon as possible, or a decision will have to be made about what to do with the money.

The prize could be redistributed to the next placegetters, she said.

The Wanaka Rotary Club released 1000 numbered ducks into the creek on Sunday morning, with 1854 making a break off the front of the bunch and arriving at Lake Wanaka in about 30 minutes.

Most of the ducks stuck together and arrived within an hour, but some got caught up in eddies and took a bit longer.

A few are still missing in action, duck catcher Ian Haynes said yesterday.
