Eleanor Frew, of Cromwell, travels to Arrowtown and said the activity was ''an enjoyable exercise for people that don't exercise''.
It keeps both the mind and body active, she said.
Instructor Audrey Henderson has been teaching the classes for about eight years and said her students loved the exercise, socialising and the music.
''We don't just dance to country; we dance to all kinds: Latin, Irish, and Scottish.''
The classes had been going for about 18 years and every week she was surprised how long the line was.
''Some people just come in off the street,'' she said, with holiday-makers from the United States and Australia looking for classes.
Regulars in her class include a lady in her mid-80s and a mother in her mid-20s who comes to the class after dropping her children at child care.
