Violinists Cathy Irons and Bogdan Kievski, viola player Mary Wilson, cellist Tomas Hurnik, flautist Tony Ferner, oboe player Susan McKeich, clarinettist Georgina Rees-Stevenson and percussionist Roanna Cooper went to the Wakatipu High School and Southern Lakes Christian School on Friday.
Co-ordinator Celia Stewart said the tour, which began in Southland and included the Central Lakes, provided performances, orchestra coaching and group tuition.
The orchestra players began their work in Invercargill on August 10 and by the end of the week had performed for or worked with about 1200 pupils.
Ms Stewart said a highlight of the tour was working with pupils from the Out of School Hours programme in Gore and combining with local musicians to present a community concert on August 11.
The concert featured the Hokonui Hi-tops, a local male voice choir, chamber ensemble Tango Mango and young musicians from Gore High School.
The Outreach and Education programme was a music community-based initiative, Ms Stewart said.
"The programme aims to educate and entertain school children and community groups, and to introduce them to the world of classical music through interaction with professional musicians, their instruments and a wide range of music."
The programme runs in Canterbury, Southland and the Central Lakes, the West Coast and Nelson-Marlborough and was fully dependent on non-government funding.
Solid Energy is the main sponsor of the programme in the South Island and the Central Lakes Trust and Community Trust of Southland are supporters of the tours in the Southland-Central Lakes region.
