Landowner opposes targeted rate

A Frankton landowner has opposed the Otago Regional Council's plans to impose a targeted rate on the area to pay for works to the Shotover delta.

Remarkables Park Ltd spoke to its submission on the council's draft long term council community plan by teleconference on Friday.

The company is developing land within the Remarkables Park zone south of Queenstown Airport and next to the Kawarau and Shotover Rivers.

Its spokesman, Alastair Porter, said the company was concerned about the money allocated to the works by the council, especially as it was still going through the resource consent process.

He was particularly concerned about the lack of benefit to the company from the works, as the Frankton flats were not affected by flooding, he said The company also believed the council should look at funding dedicated to passenger ferries on Lake Wakatipu to relieve the traffic congestion in Queenstown.

A request was also made for funds to support walking and cycling tracks, as well as to repair a slip on the Kawarau River alongside Remarkables Park.

The hearing committee adjourned the hearing and went into committee to consider submissions.

Recommendations would be made next month.
