The Queenstown Primary School 1 team took top honours in the year 5-6 round at last night's Extra! social studies Quiz in Cromwell, but not before correctly answering a difficult question to break the tie for first place with The Terrace 1, of Alexandra.

The Queenstown 1 team, comprising Riley McLay, (10), Thomas Rewi (10) and Zoe Richards (11), correctly named Lance Armstrong as the former Tour de France multiple winner considering a comeback to the famous cycle race.

That dropped The Terrace 1 to second place, ahead of a three-way tie for third between The Terrace 2, Clyde 2 and Queenstown 2.

The year 7-8 section was won by Alexandra 1, with 95 points out of a possible 100.

Twins Millie and Mac Townsend (12) and Ben Fisher (13) made short work of the questions and led the whole way.

Second was Mt Aspiring on 92 and The Terrace 5 was third on 90 points.

In the competition, teams of three had to answer questions based on what they had learned from the Otago Daily Times Extra! supplement.

Extra! editor Ivan Behrnes said the standard was very high, with several schools sitting on 25 out of 25 answers correct after the first few rounds.

After the year 5-6 pupils had demonstrated their knowledge, it was the turn of the 47 teams from the year 7-8 group and they proved equally as knowledgeable.
