A family fun day at the Remarkables Park Shopping Centre this month will signal the start of the Christmas shopping season.

The Frankton shopping centre will be the hub of activity on November 29, which includes the annual parade led by Santa riding high on a Shotover Jet.

Throughout the day children will be kept entertained by bouncy castles, dancing competitions and games, while the adults can take part in a "cake off, bake off" competition, enjoy the entertainment or get started on their Christmas shopping.

Korrena Mielke, of Remarkables Park Town Centre, said the day was seen as "kicking off Christmas in a fun way".

"There'll be discounts from many retailers, a gift-wrapping station and a relaxed atmosphere.

The "cake off, bake off" was the first of what will be an annual event, encouraging all who had a "special cake recipe" to compete for a $150 New World gift voucher.

Ms Mielke said keen bakers could bring their cakes to the Town Centre radio hub before 12.15pm, with the "taste off" beginning at 12.30pm.

Spot prizes would also be provided on the day by retailers in the area.

Ms Mielke said Remarkables Park had enjoyed a great year with the introduction of a grand new building and an increasing range of retail stores, and the day was in part to celebrate that.

The countdown is on for the 2008 Shotover Jet Remarkable Christmas Spectacular, with rehearsals under way and tickets on sale.

More than 250 locals got some of the best seats in the house by pre-purchasing their tickets in conjunction with the Shotover Jet Locals' Day on Saturday and they will be in for a treat, with a stellar line-up hard at work to bring some Christmas cheer to Queenstown.

The cast includes "Mike B", Simon Green, Andrea Cruickshank, Anita Haira, Emily Burns and many local artists.

The band comprises Mark Wilson, Nigel Hirst, Ned Webster, Sam Healey and Phil Hartshorn, with featured artists Marty Newell, Jesse Finn, Peter Waaka, Sam Maxwell, Marcus Figueroa, Duncan Sadlier, Aaron Clarken, Rebecca Ledger, Holly Hoogvliet, Karen Reid, Melita Gizilis, Molly Devine, Kirsten Anderson, the Queenstown Highland Pipe Band and the Remarkable Christmas Male Ballet Company.

Creative director Doug Kamo said the audience should be prepared for a brilliant show.

Tickets for the event, which will be held at the Queenstown Events Centre are on sale at QEC, i-Site Queenstown and Wanaka and at TicketDirect.
