Kingston to become better prepared in case of flooding

Kingston is preparing to be more flood-ready after Queenstown Lakes District Council representatives and emergency services paid a visit to the town last week.

Members of the Kingston Community Association took part in the flood education exercise with QLDC's Andrew Wilson to test whether the town was as prepared as it could be.

Association chairwoman Annette Dalziel said the visit was well worthwhile and had got the association motivated to be better prepared.

"It was nice and personalised and it stimulates us to take action for the future."

The day consisted of strategies and advice about issues such as flood-proofing homes as well as random community door-knocking to ask what residents thought could be done better.

"It was interesting in the way we were given advice to identify people in the community who will need help in an emergency."

Mrs Dalziel said a sub-committee of the association would meet during the next few weeks with emergency services in the town such as the fire brigade and ambulance services.

They will then report to the council to show the changes they have made to their flood emergency preparations.

"We've got to really check the people here are prepared."
