Kawarau development variations applied for

The developer of the $1 billion Kawarau Falls Station project near Queenstown is applying for variations to its resource consent to change building designs and materials and to build canopies on some of the buildings in stage 1.

Construction has continued on five stage 1 buildings despite Melview (Kawarau Falls Station) Investments Ltd being placed in receivership in May last year and owing creditors $183.5 million.

The company has applied to Lakes Environmental for a variation to its resource consent to make design changes to three of the five buildings nearing completion in stage 1.

It wants to change the design of the Reserve Central building to vary the cladding, roofing and balustrade materials, window sizes and roof slope, the application says.

It wants to construct canopies on the Kingston West building and to alter its external appearance.

The redesign is to include raising the height of an internal dining room by removing a hotel suite, increasing window heights and changing materials and finishes.

The application says the changes would create a "more interesting and diverse design".

The company seeks to put canopies on the Lakeside West building to shelter people using the walkways.

It wants to reduce the window size of the Lakeside West building to give occupants more privacy and alter the shape of the roof.

The application says the changes were minor and consistent with the overall development.

A separate application for resource consent seeks a height infringement of up to .485m for the Lakeside West building.
