Wakatipu's French community will invoke the cuisine, wine, song and dance of their homeland to celebrate Bastille Day, at Les Alpes restaurant tonight.

Left Bank Cafe also opens for the first time today, from 6am.

The new French-kitchen inspired eatery was part of the $2 million revamp at the French-owned Sofitel Queenstown Hotel and Spa.

Citizens of France who now call the resort home will gather at Les Alpes tonight.

Arrowtown Autumn Festival favourites the Buckingham Belles will perform two sets of the French music hall dance, the cancan, at 6.30pm and 8pm.

Violinist Pat Monaghan and keyboardist Les Richardson play live at 7.15pm and 8.30pm.

Les Alpes marketing manager Serena Mars yesterday said bookings were essential.

A prize would be given for the "most French-looking table".

Left Bank Cafe, named after the Parisian haunt of artists, writers and philosophers, opens on Bastille Day as "a happy coincidence", Sofitel sales and marketing director Tanya Dennis said yesterday.

Solera Vino French Restaurant, in Queenstown, and Bonjour Cafe, in Arrowtown, did not have festivities planned for Bastille Day.

However, Bonjour Cafe was taking bookings for a midwinter European Christmas party on Saturday, July 24.

Bastille Day commemorates the 1790 Fete de la Federation, held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789.

The anniversary of the storming of the Parisian fortress-prison is seen as a revolutionary symbol of the uprising of the modern republic of France.
