Johnson concert

About 200 people flocked to see and hear top New Zealand recording artist Greg Johnson give a rare performance in Queenstown, on Saturday night.

Melodic Kiwiana stories were sung by Johnson and bandmates Ted Brown, Ben King and Wayne Bell in flawless four-part harmony, while they played guitars, mandolin, keyboards, trumpet, harmonica and a box as a drum kit.

The bestselling Apra Silver Scroll and twice Tui award winner returned to the resort for the first time in seven years with a two-hour set packed with hits and favourites from his 10-album career.

Hits Isabelle, Save Yourself and Now the Sun is Out were especially greeted with cheers and applause in a show which enchanted the crowd, including his mother, in Prime Waterfront Restaurant and Bar.

The personable Auckland-born artist, who resides in California, performed in Queenstown as part of his Small Towns and Ball Gowns tour, which had taken the group to Riverton the day before.

Johnson said the band had picked up 10 dozen oysters from the deep South to "distribute to northern clans".

Their show was opened by up-and-coming Christchurch singer-songwriter Mel Parsons.
