Intersections, speed focus of traffic operation

Queenstown police issued tickets for 83 vehicle defects, 76 intersection offences, 64 infringement notices and about 100 motorists were given verbal warnings last week.

Police focused on speed, intersections and seatbelts during a traffic operation on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

More than 3000 vehicles were stopped during the operation, which was in answer to traffic complaints by Wakatipu residents.

A plain vehicle was used by officers to observe and record details of traffic cutting the corner when turning right from State Highway 6 on to Peninsula Rd.

Officers also staked out vehicles failing to stop at the compulsory stop sign at the Sunshine Bay end of Fernhill Rd on to Glenorchy-Queenstown Rd.

Vehicles speeding on State Highway 6 near the Queenstown Events Centre were targeted and officers monitored Kawarau Rd, in Frankton, and other roads near Queenstown and Arrowtown.

Sergeant Brian Cameron said 64 motorists could expect infringement notices in the post this week for cutting the corner from State Highway 6 into Kelvin Heights.

The vast majority were completely within the opposing traffic lane.

"Intersection offences have been identified among the top five causes in fatal crashes and are inherently dangerous.

"It is not enough to say there were no vehicles coming the other way - there is no excuse for being in the opposing traffic lane when turning a corner."

Sgt Cameron said there were 15 tickets issued for seatbelt offences.

"A positive note of the operation was the very high compliance rate for motorists wearing their seatbelts and that no motorists were detected with excess breath or blood alcohol."
