Members of the winning band in the 2009 Ultimate Battle of the Musos competition said their first experience in a recording studio was "real intense" but a valuable insight into the music industry.

Vocalist Alex Fraser, lead guitarist Connor Williams, guitarist Matt Milliken, bass player Josh Baldey and drummer Matiu Gourlay are the Intergalactic Disco Movement.

The Wakatipu High School band recorded its original song I'm Feeling It at Studio 183 on Saturday.

The session was its prize for winning the best original song award in the competition final at X-it Youth Centre on September 25.

Matiu said the band members had geared up for the recording time and the experience had taught them how to work as a group.

Studio 183 owner Dave Allison, recording artist Andrea Cruickshank and the lads commenced the labour-intensive task of creating an ideal track for each musician, then editing and mixing those tracks with the aim of producing a CD for the band to promote and distribute if they wish.

"It takes such a long time because you're not only dealing with accuracy and rhythm, you've got to get a great performance," Miss Cruickshank said.

"Each track has to be perfect in tone, time and dynamics."

Mr Allison said the band was "pretty good" and the session was going well.

"Everybody's been thoroughly professional and a pleasure to work with.

"Some bands who come into a recording studio are quite thrown by the process as it's different to playing live, and sometimes that kills the performance. These guys are handling it quite well, which was probably helped by a pre-production meeting to get them used to it."
